ICS Method – Integrating Craniosacral Therapy and Osteopathy

At my practice in Nijmegen I work with craniosacral therapy using the ICS method — an osteopathically-inspired approach that supports the body’s own capacity to heal and regulate itself.

What Is ICS (Integrated Cranio-Sacral System)?

The ICS method (Integrated Cranio-Sacral System) is both a diagnostic and therapeutic approach that combines elements from craniosacral therapy and osteopathy. It was developed by osteopath Oren Dotan, D.O., and has been taught in the USA, Europe, and Israel for more than 15 years.

The aim of ICS craniosacral therapy is to create optimal mechanical and physiological conditions so the body can activate its self-healing potential — especially in cases of pain, movement restrictions, and chronic dysfunctions.

During a session, the therapist examines different body systems to identify the underlying cause of a complaint and works with gentle, precise touch, tuned to the pace and resilience of your body.

Focus Areas in the ICS Method

Within the ICS model, the treatment pays special attention to:

  • Tension within the nervous system, especially the dural system
  • Issues around the base of the skull (e.g., sphenobasilar junction dysfunctions)
  • Balance between the hormonal and nervous systems
  • Supporting the body’s inherent self-healing processes

Rather than only addressing symptoms, the ICS approach looks for systemic connections and root causes.

What Makes This Method Unique?

Compared to many other craniosacral techniques, ICS stands out because it:

  • Combines diagnosis and treatment within the same session
  • Works on multiple layers of tissue and regulation simultaneously
  • Uses a clear, structured approach without forcing
  • Applies highly refined and sensitive hands-on methods

The treatment is suitable for people with recurring, long-standing, or hard-to-explain complaints.

Who Can Benefit from ICS Craniosacral Therapy?

This form of therapy can provide support for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Stress, tension, and overload
  • Burn-out and fatigue-related symptoms
  • Headaches and neck, shoulder or jaw discomfort
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive complaints
  • Chronic or unexplained physical symptoms
  • Emotional tension stored in the body

Even without a specific medical diagnosis, clients often find that craniosacral therapy enhances overall body awareness, relaxation, and resilience.

People commonly experience sessions as deeply relaxing and regulating for both the nervous system and emotional state.
